Of Dragon Boats and Taiwanese Operas
To most people, the smell of steaming zhongzi (glutinous rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves) signals the approach of the annual dragon boat festival. While many locals look forward to the holidays for having a day off or being able to enjoy some of the best rice dumplings with delicious fillings, many expatriates living in Taipei and friends from abroad are actually looking forward to the great opportunities of competing against rival teams on the rivers around Taiwan, armed by oars while commanding the canoe in the shape of ancient Chinese dragons.

Taipei and Tainan Mayors Join Hands in Promoting Tainan Delicacies

Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin and Tainan Mayor Hsu Tain-tsair appeared at the press conference announcing the second “Meet Tainan in Taipei” exhibition on May 15. The event is located on the seventh floor of A8 building at the Shin Kong Mitsukoshi Xinyi New Life Square.
New Parking Lot with Swimming Pool Opens to the Public

Mayor Hau Lung-bin inaugurated the new underground parking lot and swimming pool complex located inside Rongxing Park on May 15. The design of the facility centers around the concept of providing easy access for physically-impaired users.
Discover Taipei: Now in Japanese!

Discover Taipei, the bi-monthly magazine published by the Department of Information and Tourism (TPEDOIT), will be releasing a brand-new Japanese edition starting with the 2008 May/June issue (volume 65). The agency has been publishing the magazine in English since September 1997.

Mayor Orders City Rescue Team to Standby for Possible Deployment

In light of the mounting casualties from the earthquake in China, Mayor Hau Lung-bin has ordered the Fire Department to standby. President-elect Ma Ying-jeou also expressed his interest in the readiness of Taipei City Urban Search and Rescue Team for possible action.
