History

Originally named Bazhilan ("thermal spring"), Shilin was once the headquarters of the aboriginal Ketagalan tribe which lived here over 200 years ago. Until the Qing Dynasty, Shilin was referred to as Zhilan Fortress. By the end of the Qing Dynasty, many literary talents from Shilin had passed the imperial examination, and the town was renamed "Shilin", which means "congregation of scholars and talents".

Business

Shilin is famous for two areas as Tianmu Commercial Circle and Shilin Night Market.

  1. Tianmu Commercial Circle: In 1949, when the Kuomintang government moved its seat to Taiwan from mainland China, representatives of various parliament and legislature bodies, high-ranking officials and expats moved to this area, making a high-class residential district. By the time of economic development booming, Tianmu has become a hot shopping circle for young generation.
  2. Shilin Night Market: A world-renowned night market is a shopping area with eating and drinking stands and stores in the plaza. It is closed to Jiantan MRT station, bringing hundreds of thousands of local and foreign tourists to shopping and eating.
