Construction of Two Songshan Line Section Contracts Given Outstanding Rating for Construction Site Performance by Taipei City Government

    -- February 21, 2008 --

The final results of the 2007 Taipei City Construction Site 5S Environmentally-Friendly Campaign held by Taipei City's Department of Environmental Protection was released recently and DORTS' Central District Project Office (CDPO) received an award from Mayor Hao Lung-bin on February 1, 2008 for its outstanding performance in environmental protection during the implementation of section contracts CG590B and CG590C of the Songshan line. Section Contract CG590B was undertaken by RSEA Engineering Corporation and Okumura Engineering Corporation of Japan while Da Cin Construction Co., Ltd. was in charge of Section Contract CG590C.

In order to offer praise to those departments that have excelled in the implementation of environmental protection concepts and comprehensively enhanced their management of construction sites, Taipei City initiated the Construction Site 5S Environmentally-Friendly Movement in 2007. The movement not only signifies that Taipei City government will put constant emphasis on environmental protection but also conveys Mayor Hao's expectation for a much cleaner construction environment. The 5S stands for "Seiri", "Sieton", "Seiso", "Seiketsu", and "Shitsuke" in Japanese. The main points of the movement are to urge contractors to beautify construction sites, to keep construction sites in order, to clean construction sites and surroundings, to keep construction machinery clean and working well, and to maintain good order and discipline on construction sites at all times during construction.

CDPO representatives said that participating in the competition process is the best environmental education and training, and that the CDPO will continue to make great efforts to promote operations related to the movement. Due to the high level of geological complexity and construction needing to be carried out close to residential and school areas, work on the Songshan line has been very difficult and requires cooperation and support from the public. The CDPO also hopes to upgrade construction techniques to reduce the impact on people and the environment. Additionally it plans to put environmental concepts first as it strives to build a better quality MRT.
