Mayor Reviews New Security Camera System
Mayor Hau Lung-bin arrived at Wolong Police Station to inspect the newly installed video surveillance system on April 8. The close-circuit television network is a part of the implementation plan of Taipei’s Zero Tolerance Policy.

The mayor remarked that an important feature of the new security camera system is the ability to allow users to input keywords and retrieve matching images from the video archives. The powerful query system will reduce the time required for searching through the database.

According to Hau, 13,000 security cameras will be installed at 11,500 locations across Taipei City. The project will cost the city NT$1.6 billion; it will enhance the city's capabilities in protecting civilians, preventing disasters, and monitoring traffic.

Regarding questions of whether the surveillance system will lead to privacy infringements, Hau stressed that the City respects and protects the privacies of individuals. The security cameras will be placed at public areas, and the locations have been selected based on recommendations by agencies - with the approval of local borough chiefs.

The City will draft guidelines governing the use of video footages from the database. These measures will establish a systematized process for accessing the information and protect the rights of individuals.
