Crime Rate Lowest in Seven Years
At an award ceremony on June 13, 2008, Mayor Hau Lung-bin recognized
police officers who have distinguished themselves with outstanding
services and special contributions to the city and its residents by
giving out the annual service awards.
The crime rate in 2007 was the lowest it has been in seven years. Out of
the 54,084 incidents reported in 2007, 44,000 were solved, which makes
the crime solving rate at 82.2%. Violent crimes were reduced by 21.5%
and robbery and burglary have reduced by 12.7%. Hau said this is only
possible because of the officers' excellent work ethic and dedication.
What they have accomplished is not easy, Hau noted. Taipei has always
been a safe city, he explained. So it is much more challenging for the
city to improve on the crime solving rate, comparing to what the New
York City's former mayor Rudy Giuliani have done with his "Zero
Tolerance" initiative.
This is a prestige award. Out of the 103 nominees, only 30 were selected
for the awards.
Hau says the winners represent all the hard working police men and
women. And on behalf of all the residents, he would like to sincerely
thank them for their hard work and commitment. He also praises former
police commissioner Wang Cho-Chiun, took over as director-general of the
National Police Agency, for his many years of service and leadership.
